The idea simply lies in the components of the perfume itself, as perfumes consist of the raw material - which represents the aromatic oil - and alcohol. The higher the percentage of aromatic oil in the bottle, the stronger the stability of this perfume and its longer lasting period. The lower its percentage, the less stable it becomes, and thus its scent will last for a shorter period.
You usually find the concentration of the perfume under the brand name on the bottle, and this concentration indicates the strength of the perfume. Because it is difficult for everyone to remember the ratios to determine the strength of the perfume, perfume concentrations have been divided into categories. Each category has a name that expresses the ratio between the essential oil and the percentage of alcohol. Through the name of the concentration category on the perfume bottle, you can determine its strength and its durability.
Perfume categories:
Perfumes are divided into five basic types in terms of concentration: Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne, and Eau Fraiche. Each of these names is merely an indication of the concentration level of the perfume in the bottle, and has nothing to do with the brand or the scent of the perfume itself.
1- Perfume:
This category includes the most concentrated and most durable perfumes, as the concentration of the aromatic oil in the bottle ranges from 20% to 30%, so it lasts for the longest period of time, up to 8 hours, which makes it the most expensive perfume ever.
This category of perfumes is suitable for people with sensitive skin due to the low percentage of alcohol, and it is preferable to use it in the winter due to its strength.
2- Eau de Parfum:
Some popular perfumes fall under this category - known as EDP for short - and the concentration of perfume in them ranges between 15% and 20%, and therefore they are less expensive than the previous category.
On average, scents in this category last for four to five hours, and it is considered suitable for people with sensitive skin compared to other types of perfumes.
This category of perfumes is considered more suitable for use in the fall and winter seasons, and many consider it to include the best perfumes for women, as it offers a good balance between the strength of the perfume and the price.
3- Eau de Toilette:
Eau de Toilette (EDT) is the most popular and widely used perfume category because it is affordable and has a concentration of between 5% and 15% of the essential oil. If you look at your perfume bottles, you will likely find that they all fall into this category.
EDT usually lasts for three to four hours and is considered a suitable perfume for daily use in the spring and summer.
4- Eau de Cologne:
This category includes perfumes with a higher concentration of alcohol, as the concentration of aromatic oil in them ranges from 2% to 5%, so they are cheaper than the previous types.
This category of perfume lasts for up to two hours only, and it is one of the types of perfumes that evaporate quickly, and it is considered refreshing in hotter weather, so it is available in larger bottles, and at a lower price than all previous types of perfumes.
5- Fresh Water:
This category includes the lightest concentrated perfumes ever, lasting for less than two hours, because the concentration of aromatic oil in them is very low, ranging from 1% to 3% only.
